Victoria Gotti is an excellent writer and I found this book riveting. It's been quite a long time since I couldn't put down a book but this one I could not. John Gotti is/was a fascinating person. I have always been curious about the reality behind the media portrayal of a man like him. I take everything with a ton of salt so I believed almost none of what was reported. It'll never be 100% clear what he did/didn't do as far as his illegal activities. We can focus on that forever and never sort it out. What is clear is that he spent tons of his time doing his best to help others. He gave advice, time, money, an ear... always. I never knew that this was the actual job. There is the worst of the job and Gotti's best behavior could never eclipse that, but if we were to focus mostly on the best in this man in order to learn from this life (and not repeat any of the pitfalls) then I would say we should focus on helping one another.Also, he seems to have always tried to be the best man he could be. However, he was working within a context that preempted success in truly becoming the best man he could be. You can't really be a great man and be part of 'The Life'. But in the context of The Life, he was the best. There is something to be said for a man with that big of a heart, despite being surrounded by all that darkness.It seems like Victoria only found her voice when she was almost dead. She never writes about her life except for through others, her children, mother, husband... and only of herself when she has been near death. Like she didn't have a right to have any wants or needs unless she was dying. It's okay to be human and have thoughts/needs/desires and express them. It seems at the core an issue of identity. I guess in a culture where men rule and women are to be subservient this makes sense. I wonder if senior would have evolved to see the folly of sidelining women. If they are valued as less than, they may see themselves as less than. It is in a daughter that a man can really see the impact of his attitudes toward women, if he looks.
