This is the first true crime non-fiction book I’ve read by author Caitlin Rother. I’d read good comments about her books which convinced me to read this book. She is a good writer and obviously is very thorough in doing her investigative research. As a big fan of true crime writers Ann Rule and Kathryn Casey, I couldn’t help but compare Rother’s writing with theirs.I was very disappointed with some of the structure of this book. I expected and wanted to read the prosecutor’s opening/closing arguments verbatim not glossed over. What did he exactly describe to the jurors as to his theory of how the ex-husband gained entry to the murder victim’s home? If the murder took place in the victim’s office then why did the police find her body in the bedroom as stated by the author? I re-read that particular section of the book and was still confused about that point. She skimmed over the testimony given by the youngest daughter of the victim which irritated me because I thought it was important to include. A true crime writer is able to gain access to a crime trial transcript so I don’t understand this.Overall a major issue for me about this particular book is that primarily the defendant’s daughters, mother, and multiple mistresses are so blatantly unlikable and blindly loyal to the narcissistic, money greedy, loathsome sociopathic ex-husband. I couldn’t empathize with the daughter at all. Where was their loyalty to their mother the victim of the brutal murder? Why would they support allowing their father to use money entrusted to them by their mother in her will to be used to pay for his private attorneys for his defense?! Talk about pouring salt into the wound as it were. How shocking, how shameful to do to their mother after her brutal death by their despicable father the defendant.And then there’s the shoddy investigative work done by the police and the Medical Examiner’s Office. The ME who conducted the victim’s autopsy failed to sterilize the nail clippers used on the victim, transferring blood from a previous autopsy to underneath the victim’s nails, contaminating the process. Furthermore, this doddering ME also admitted on the stand that he transported the victim’s body in the back of his pick up truck “because it was more convenient “ and he’d done it before “about 10 or so times”.What?!
